Toyo Bio-pharma supplies Flanvangenol™ (pine bark extract)
as the key ingredient to “Flavan Tea™” marketed by Suntory
since November 2003 in the very competitive Japanese
beverage market. Flavan Tea™ is sold in convenience stores
and other retail outlets, with approximately 400,000 cases
sold in the first three months after the initial market
launch. Suntory is promoting this bottled tea as a
functional beverage that helps increase energy.

Toyo Bio-pharma has established a joint venture with the
Orient Corporation, one of the largest Japanese credit card
and financial institutions. Orient Corporation has a unique
sales channel through their card holders.This new joint
venture will sell newly developed dietary supplements such
as Young Barley Juice through member stores for Orico Card.
They are targeting sales at $30 million in three years.

Toyo Bio-pharma established their new plant in Tosu, Kyushu
with double the operations and production capacity. This new
plant was built and furnished to meet Japan’s GMP compliance
for pharmaceutical facilities, even though their products
are functional foods and dietary supplements.

Toyo Bio-pharma has set up a new joint venture with Sumitomo
Corporation in the dietary supplement business.
The new joint venture name is
“SUMISHO WELLNESS.” Sumitomo Corporation is one of biggest
Japanese trading firms (SOOGOO SHOOSHA) and its abbreviation
in Japanese is SUMISHO. In Japan, the Sumitomo Corporation
is regarded as a reputable company. This new company is
equally owned by Sumitomo Corporation and Toyo Bio-pharma,
but the sales will be the responsibility of Sumitomo
Corporation because of their direct marketing channels such
as Shop channel of Jupiter Cable T.V., which is the
affiliated cable media of Sumitomo Corporation. Toyo Bio-pharma
is responsible for developing new packaged supplement and
cosmetic products, manufacturing and R&D. They are aiming
for $300 million in sales in the next five years.

Toyo Bio-pharma began a new commercial researching business
to obtain and analyze clinical data for clients on a
contract basis - CRO business. Toyo Bio-pharma has already

Toyo Bio-pharma has taken over sales of the Pueraria flower
extract from Ohtaisan, a well known pharmaceutical company.
Ohtaisan has started to work with Toyo Bio-pharma to
establish a presence in the dietary supplement market.
Ohtaisan dedicated their R&D power to Pueraria flower
extract and sold it through a familiar channel in the
pharmaceutical industry. However, Ohtaisan believes this
product is more suited for the dietary supplement sales
channel. Because of this, the company decided to collaborate
with Toyo Bio-pharma as their partner to develop a dietary
supplement with Pueraria flower extract, also known as a
“hangover helper” as it promotes acetaldehyde degradation.

Toyo Bio-pharma has obtained additional FOSHU (Foods for
Specified Health Use) recommendations from the Japanese
government (Health Protection Department) for two new items
called “Ryoku-Ko Young Barley Juice” and “Chitosan”.The
total FOSHU items which Toyo Bio-pharma has obtained has
reached thirteen, the most in the dietary supplement
industry in Japan.

Toyo Bio-pharma and Morinaga Confectionary jointly developed
a fermented extraction from red pepper called “CH10
Sweet”.Extracts of the red pepper is known to be an
effective natural thermogenic. This fermented extraction
from red pepper can be taken in sizable quantities because
it is not hot.
